Trans Women Study Internships

Short term full or part time paid internship for a trans woman or nonbinary AMAB person. Some bennies to this internship such as you can work mostly from home whenever you want and a super chill supervisor. The first part would be paid training module on doing qualitative research. The other main parts of the job will be a literature review, doing interviews and bringing everything together for a paper and presentation at the end. You don’t need to worry if you didn’t follow all that since it is an internship we’ll give you all the tools you need and there is already another trans women working on the project so you won’t be alone. We just have more work than we can complete by the end of the grant so we are bringing on another person.

The CFAR CAB, in collaboration with Community-Based Organizations—like Lifelong AIDS Alliance and Rad Care—and local health departments, are working together to organize a community mobilization campaign to reduce HIV stigma among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women. Among People Living With HIV (PLWH), stigma is a primary determinant of health and well-being and causes significant drop-off in the HIV care continuum. This is especially true in the areas of: testing/diagnosis, linkage to care, retention in care, and viral suppression.
To help identify and work to problem-solve these complicated issues, the Stigma Working Group (SWG) is a dedicated group of CAB members interested in addressing HIV-related stigma. The SWG aims to understand the causes of HIV/AIDS-related stigma—with the specific goal of reducing stigma among Gay, Bi, and other MSM populations, as well as Transgender Women. The group meets on the second Tuesday of each month.

Current Stigma Working Group activities include:

  • Conducting a systematic literature review and authoring a research article.
  • Conducting formative, qualitative data research from CFAR SWG focus groups and interviews on at-risk communities.
  • Engaging social, community, and health organizations with the goal of designing anti-stigma activities.

Job Description & Outline of Activities for the Transgender Women Study Intern:

Transgender individuals experience a particularly challenging healthcare landscape, and because of those challenges are at increased vulnerabilities for the acquisition and transmission of HIV infection. Many of the factors that limit engagement and retention in the HIV care and prevention delivery system have to do with systemic (societal and economic) and discriminatory practices (actual and interpreted) that limit them from accessing and utilizing appropriate healthcare. It is further compounded by the availability of culturally sensitive providers. This Coordinator position is intended to further the work being done to engage and link Trans Women not only to CFAR CAB activities, but facilitate community discussions of Trans Women health delivery services activities by Trans Women.

  • Approximately 40 hours per week until the end of June @ $15/Hour—to be disbursed appropriately:
    • hiring 1 or more person depending on availability
  • Ability to work semi-independently—with regular CFAR SWG communication.
  • Some reimbursable local and regional travel is required.
  • Focus Groups/In-person Interviews to be conducted by June 30, 2019. 20 Participants Minimum. $75.00 in incentives will be provided to each participant.
  • Findings will be submitted to the CFAR SWG in the form of a qualitative and quantitative report.
  • Ongoing oversight and support, at the ground level, will be guided by both members of the CFAR CAB and, when feasible, from key staff form Lifelong AIDS Alliance, the micro-grant’s fiduciary pass-through entity.

Some of the key strategic questions You will be thinking about are:

  • How to engage and empower Trans Women (and their aligned communities) along the I-5 corridor in Washington and Oregon in HIV-related stigma (project-based research).
  • How to motivate and ensure sufficient community representation and participation in local and regional HIV healthcare access meetings.
  • How to act as a community and organizational liaison for the CFAR CAB and SWG—including regular and routine participation in all CFAR CAB and CFAR SWG activities.
  • How to assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of the needs assessment focus groups/interview project, including data analysis for future community-based educational activities.
  • How to engage community members in order to initiate recruitment in meaningful focus group interviews (of at least 20 participants).
    • Discussion will relate to issues pertaining to HIV-related stigma and healthcare accessibility and utilization needs.
    • Formulation of Focus Groups/In-person Interviews—and the subsequent development of focus group/interview questionnaires—will be done in tandem with the CFAR SWG and, when appropriate, from members of Lifelong or the Office of Infectious Disease (OID) at the WA State Department of Health (WA DOH).
  • How to appropriately and comfortably lead project-based and ongoing discussions (formal and informal) across the targeted communities.
  • How to seek and maintain working relationships with local community organizations and partners, local health departments, health care organizations, human service providers, and other affiliated and unaffiliated (or aligned) organizations.
  • How to enhance the capacity of local, Community Based Organizations (CBO) to engage and maintain lasting relationships with our intended communities.
  • How to manage closure of the project’s objectives and ensure appropriate follow-up with the intended audience and communities.
  • How to ensure timely preparation and submission of required reports.

Required Expertise & Related Work or Personal Experience:

  • Relevant field work or personal experience with the Trans community.
  • Basic knowledge of local issues related to HIV community services and Trans Women healthcare needs.
  • Comfort with Community Mobilization efforts and the use of Social Media.
  • Working with and monitoring of project-based needs and budget management skills.
  • Work experience in complex formal and informal work settings.
  • Fluent in English and preferences for those who are Bilingual in Spanish or Tagalog.
